Dying nylon// "tactical" gear.

Got an older huge SOG backpack with lumbar support etc. Price was great @ free. Only caveat, is it has some stupid shit written in sharpy on the front. (Peace symbol and some other sillyness.) It's like tan/brown. Was wondering how easy would it to be to like R.I.T. dye the whole thing black rather than just painting a big black square over the dumb writing?

If I was just hiking with it or something I wouldn't care, but swapping it out for my 20 year old small high school backpack as my daily work bag.

No, no it isnt'.

@ Irving, no it's too wide spread over the front. Suppose I could almost try sewing an entire new face over it, but just turning it into a black bag seemed simplest. Just not sure how well the typical tactical (god I hate that word) nylon would take to any kind of dye.

Is it a bunch of writing on different areas? Dye is probably your best bet. Call Rockywoods up in Longmont and they can probably steer you in the right direction.

Use 1/2 bottle Rit liquid dye or 1 package of Rit powder dissolved in 2 cups of very hot water for each pound of fabric. For dark colors, double the amount of dye. Stir well. Add 1 cup of salt for cottons or 1 cup of white vinegar for silk, wool and nylon along with a squirt of dishwashing liquid.

RIT it is then I guess. Though the vinegar seems odd. I'll try and get before after pics if I get time. Also in the middle of mild renovation for putting my 300 gallon reef tank in.

I used RIT to dye molded nylon parts years ago. I assume it would work of fabric, but haven't tried it. If you do it, post some pics. I have some nylon crap I wouldn't mind changing the color on as well.
