    Default House Siding???

Anyone on here do house siding that wants to bid a job?

Alternatively, has anyone on here done the siding on their house themselves?

I want to add insulation, and reside my house, to help with thermal efficiency.

I am thinking either insulated vinyl, or insulation foam board and then Hardyboard Siding.

    Thanks.

With two people, a nail gun, and a couple of jigs to hold the siding it is pretty easy and goes fast. Even faster if you can have a third person making cuts. Make sure to use the correct nails.

I advise against vinyl siding. It's absolutely terrible in windy environments and high uv

    I appreciate the feedback.

Question though, with the experiences of vinyl siding you guys have had, has it been the insulated vinyl siding?

My neighbors had the foam insulation backed vinyl siding installed last year, and they haven't had any issues with the wind that we have gotten. Too soon to tell about UV.

I would prefer Hardy siding, but since I am working towards selling the house this summer, the cost does weigh in for me.

I wrapped the house with tyvek home wrap. I installed the James Hardy 50 year cement board siding. Redid the Soffitts and facia at the same time. It helped tremendously with noise and heat loss.

I imaine the foam board would really be nice to add since it wont add much work. Doing the siding is very easy. Fire up your compressor and nail gun its not a bad job. Goes on very quick.

I should say... I dont know your skill level, how tall your house is, how complicated your home design is, so it may not be easy.
Skill level is more than capable of hanging siding. I'm definitely not a carpenter, but I have good quality true levels, a saw that makes straight cuts, and plenty of nail guns or screw drivers.

The issue is the time. I don't really have enough time to do it now, and we are slow with the price of oil. Once we get the deal inked for this next project (hopefully tomorrow or Monday), we are going to be BUSY building towers and installing gear.

Mine is entirely with non backed but it's the same junk with foam stuck on it... If you're selling in a year then you won't see much savings from the added insulation.

You'll be throwing money away with any improvement you make that's not appearances or inspection issues

Agreed, but I'm guessing I'm going to have to side the house anyway (when we sell it), and my office (on the west side of the house) heats up a LOT in the afternoon, hence why I would look at adding the insulation.

The original 1974 cardboard siding is showing it's age and damage.

That's your decision to make. Just trying to point out things that can be over looked. Insulation is for home owners who think long term payback. I.e. 10+ years.

If you're in a hole below the wind or in the middle of a suburb where you won't take the brunt of high winds then vinyl could work. You'll be out of there long before the uv issues show up. Pay careful attention to the installation instructions.

I am likely going to go with Hardie. Compared to LP Smartside, which needs to be painted, the price is almost the same. I am not skilled enough to do the work myself, so i am hiring a contractor.
