Plumbing question - using basement floor drains?
I have an unfinished basement, and want to put in a stainless utility sink, for cleanup and homebrew. Meaning I'll be draining out gunk other than plain water - yeasty, stinky stuff on occasion.
There's a floor drain right near my hot water heater, and a sump pump pit in the corner of the basement. Would it be appropriate to drain with something like a garden hose into either of these, or do I actually need to have the output plumbed into the sewer stubouts? Trying to get a sense of how expensive this temporary solution would be, assuming in a year or two it'll be relocated if/when we finish the basement. I'm assuming the sump is a bad idea as that overflow pump turns on fairly often and drains out into the yard, and my neighbors would probably object to homebrew leftovers being dumped in the yard near their kids' play area. The existing stubouts are not really in a location where I want to put the sink...

It's technically against code to use the floor drain like that but it'll probably work just fine as long as you flush with plenty of water.
Yes the sump would be a bad idea

We ran a lot of the sinks in the King soopers delis and such to floor sinks (deeper than floor drains) but it's considered an indirect waste. The idea that if it ever backed up, there was a gap to the drain and it couldn't back up into the prep sinks.
For your needs right now, the floor drain is the best option. A garden hose might be too small to deal with the drainage but 1 1/2" abs is easy to run and cheap. You don't need a trap on the sink as the floor drain has one.

If you pump the brew out onto the lawn you will have every bug in the area feasting, and living, in that spot,,, and it will smell like Golden in the morning.
