Spent some time visiting with the folks who own general store/Christmas store/tourist stop in Gould. They had a bunch of humming bird feeders with at least 4 different varieties of humming birds feeding.
I could watch those birds all day.
The local mountain Broad-tailed and lowland Black-chinned Hummingbirds are abundant but the migrant Rufous and Calliope Hummingbirds are very scarce this year. I just returned from banding 217 birds in Sedona, mostly Black-chinned and Anna's, a few Rufous and only one Broad-tailed. No Calliope or Costa's this year but I did see a Rivoli's (Magnificent) Hummingbird. It's a strange year....
Our broad-tailed population has exploded in the past two weeks. There's one or two rufous around now but they usually pass through quickly (by far the most aggressive hummers). Don't think I've ever seen a calliope or black-chinned here. I'm refilling almost one gallon of nectar per day now.
Here, too. Our first Rufous showed up either the last day or two of Feb or first of Mar. Didn't hang around long.
