That is cool. I have only seen western painted turtles and snapping turtles in Colorado.

Saw this guy cruising across the parking lot of CRC today. Think he was looking for shade, because he immediately went under my vehicle when I set him down.

EDIT: Looks like this guy was a Western Ornate Box Turtle.

We have always just called them sand turtles because they prefer they sandy type soils(CRC soils) vs the the other option on the prairie(clay). We have a couple that hang out around my shop where we hauled in sandy soil and see them on the dirt roads regularly, unfortunately often flat. They make great yard ornaments when you can get them to stick around.

Snapping turtle we found in the street by my house last year. We moved him out of the road. Not sure where he came from or where he was going.

I've only ever seen the painted turtles here, and rarely at that. I had no idea we have snapping turtles here. We also have soft shelled turtles as well, according to the research paper I was reading when looking for info on that Ornate Box Turtle above.

Just 5 days later, the Western Kingbird chicks are growing up fast. Looks like four young in the brood.

Have one of their nests on one of our butt/pass corners. Must be eggs in it now. They are much more aggressive the last week or so when I go out on deck.

He's a beauty, awesome spread, I've never seen one like that during hunting season. The biggest bucks I've seen in Colorado are on the Rocky Mountain Arsenal property, all of it fenced in and no hunting.
