That is cool. I have only seen western painted turtles and snapping turtles in Colorado.
We have always just called them sand turtles because they prefer they sandy type soils(CRC soils) vs the the other option on the prairie(clay). We have a couple that hang out around my shop where we hauled in sandy soil and see them on the dirt roads regularly, unfortunately often flat. They make great yard ornaments when you can get them to stick around.
I've only ever seen the painted turtles here, and rarely at that. I had no idea we have snapping turtles here. We also have soft shelled turtles as well, according to the research paper I was reading when looking for info on that Ornate Box Turtle above.
