Default New CPW website license system

    Well, it sucks.

With Turkey limited tag applications due in a couple days, my serious advice is go try to sign up no later than Wednesday first thing because if you can't get signed up, you may find yourself standing in line at the nearest CPW office Thursday. If you aren't trying to apply for limited tags for Turkey, then wait a week and then try to sign up. Fishing licenses come up end of March if you fish year round, of course.

I believe that your chances of successful creation of a new account or recovering your old and setting a new pass word are greatest if you have last year's hunting or fishing license in hand when you try.

It's kind of a pain. I had to make a phone call to get my account all straightened out. And all I was trying to do was book a cabin at a state park.

Why do you need an account to book a cabin in the first place? Is there a discount for sportsmen?

ETA: If I don't want to have issues when it comes time to apply for licenses this year, am I able to call now and straighten things out?

Did Hick give a gazillion-dollar no-bid contract to former Obamacare website developers?

No clue. We book these cabins every year. Always do it online and never had to use anything out of the ordinary. Usually just enter some basic contact info and a payment method and done. This year it seems they made some changes and now you have to book it using your parks and wildlife account info. It said I could find this info on my hunting or fishing license but I haven’t had one of those in probably fifteen years so I had to call and get my info. Also, we used to just have one person go online and book all four cabins that we need. This year that wasn’t possible. They only let an individual book one cabin so we each had to go online and book our own.

Sounds frustrating. The completely selfish side of me wonders if I'll see less out of state hunters this year, but probably not.

I just meant, maybe they won't know this is coming and won't have the ability to straighten out their account by going to an office in person.

CPW consolidated its campsite booking with the wildlife licensing system into a new licensing system. So that process included a database export that was done with the usual competence of Colorado state government IT.

Which is to say, incompetence. So people have trouble creating a new account where the data was exported imperfectly. From the small subset of acquaintances who have hit the system this week, I've heard a variety of complaints. The latest was a friend who had renewed his drivers license online, to be told by CPW that the State motor vehicle department had only updated CPW with driver license renewals that were done in person.

I had issues applying for turkey. Setting up the account was easy but when it came time to apply, it wouldn’t accept my residency date which I found very odd since I’ve only lived in Colorado.
Upon calling and holding for an hour the lady told me it’s an issue with the new licenses if they are less than 6 months old but mine was 10 months. She didn’t have an answer to that one, I had to submit my license by email and she put in an override. It’s worked fine since then.

Definitely some growing pains but hopefully they can straighten it out. I definitely like not having to fork over almost $2k to apply for every tag for my wife and I. When my boys get older that would be $4k at today’s license prices.

any maybe enough people will get discouraged I will actually be able to book a camping spot
