I'm always looking for ways to increase realism on the range. I got the idea for a target boom from Ronin Tactics. Instructor Zero made a video as well, but neither showed how to make one. It can be set up for a moving shoot target or moving no shoot target in between the shooter and shoot target. It requires one person to hold it and move it around. I came up with this to be portable enough to fit in a car. I chose to use a Home Depot yard stick to support the target backer as they will get shot up and only cost 88 cents to replace.
Supplies:
1, 1 inch thick PVC pipe (10 foot)
1, 1 inch 45 deg. elbow
3, 1 inch straight couplings
Several wood yard sticks from home depot.
1 cardboard target backer
2 wood screws
Hack saw
Total cost was around $10.00
Cut the PVC into 3, 36" sections. Put aside.
Take the remaining foot or so of PVC and measure its length against the yard stick. Saw the yard stick so one end fits snug inside of the PVC. I used a hack saw for the cuts and a sanding block to smooth it out.
Place the yard stick over the cardboard backer. The end of the yard stick you didn't cut should line up flush with the edge of the backer.
Screw the two screws through the yard stick. These will hold the backer in place.
Assemble it all together with the couplings. The angled coupling attaches to the small section of PVC. You only need two straight couplings to assemble the three straight pipes but I used a third on the very end as a hand stop.
It has some bend to it but it seems to hold up fine. I'll be sure to get a video of it in action next time I'm at the range, hopefully next week.
