    Default AK47 elk hunt

It is actually my preferred rifle for dark timber hunting. Max visibility in unit was 150yd. Max shot distance would have been 100yd. Took this at 40-50yd while he was cruising up a hill. He took a single heavy breath, knelt, laid down and was out. Zero was where I wanted and shot was placed at base of neck- shattered spine.

Ammo used was wolf SP. I could have used anything in 762x39.

Don't buy the hype that you need blah blah caliber to take big game. Legal is good enough. Also don't try and shoot an elk at stupid distance.

Mag is easily blocked by attaching box pen tube to the base plate of mag and threading it through the spring. Mine limited big mags to legal capacity.

I've seen this picture before, and wondered why you haven't posted it before. Well done.

Very nice. I always love hearing the fudds "300 win mag is the smallist caliber for elk". Like you said know your limitations.

Nice kill. I would like to see a hunt using an AR with 300 black out. That would be legal and a great photo.
ETA: Nice job and using the one gun that everyone tells you isn't meant for hunting or that nobody uses for hunting. You used it and you well on large game. No 150 lb deer either.

Nice elk! Congrats on the meat.

A lot of kids in my high school would start elk and deer hunting with an SKS. I know several had good success with them. At the time, they were $70 for the rifle and $70 for a case of ammo. They made great little hunting rifles for getting us started.

Went out this last season with a canned 300 pistol. Same weight as AK, but wears a 1-6 vortex. Still wouldn't pull the trigger outside of 150yd.

I was much less beat up than the others in my party that were carrying typical hunting rifles. Heavy long guns made them pay the price- having to step wider and higher and duck lower than me. 5mi/day of all hill walking through deadfall has made me prefer walking light and compressed- and with a rifle that clips to pack mounts (off chest and hip straps) rather than a sling suspension.

Hunting with a pistol is not an issue? I'd rock my .300 pistol all day. Except that I hunt during muzzle loader season.
