Default Fridge dead, *updated* CPR success limping along.

    Fridge/Freezer dead.

Any recommendations on immediate action attempts I can do on the fridge? Lights on breaker not out. Been serviced once before when it died.

Hoping I can maybe leave some stuff out in a cooler with ice on the deck in the cold.

EDITED UPDATE: Cleaned coils, seems to have recovered for now. Hoping that's all it was and shopping in a few days. Think it's original to house so like 2003, probably due for replacement anyways since modern stuff seems to want more frequent replacing than my parents ancient stuff.

    First world problem.

There are people on this planet that would love to have a refrigerator, even if it didn't work.

I wouldnt mind so much, but I have stuff like bulk amounts of fish food from group buys thats a somewhat pretty penny.

Cleaned the coils, and left it, seems to be working again now. Hopefully holds while I can spend some time shopping in the week ahead.

Drives me nuts because despite the weekend being 2 days out of 7.... sure as shit always on those 2 days. This applies to 3 other major appliances with issues since I bought the place.

Usually it is the switch on the side of the compressor. Called by different names, but basically the starter relay/thermal overload assembly. They are $30-$60 and the most common reason that refers stop cooling.

Clean the fan and coils annually and refrigerators last a LONG time. If the thermal protection has been cycling frequently, eventually the bi-metal tab breaks (unit will rattle) and will have to be replaced, but it is pretty simple to do.

    Curious as to the brand?

I shy away from anything made by GE which has the worst track record in our household over the past 30 years, which includes some Kenmore/Sears appliances, and have had the best luck with Whirlpool manufactured appliances including those they made for Kenmore/Sears.

That said, I've performed a few basic repairs myself on some appliances to keep them running longer. Only once did I pay Sears to come fix a washer that needed more diagnosis and repair than I had time for and felt comfortable doing myself, that thankfully turned out to cost significantly less than a new replacement.

I don't know how current this is, but it's a good resource.
