Default Cosmetic Damage Exclusion question for insurance folks

    Hi guys,

My premiums would be lowered a little bit if I signed this "Cosmetic Damage Exclusion to Roof Coverings caused by hail" endorsement. My Spidey sense tells me there is a bit more to it than just the "we won't change the roof if the shingles are bruised or made ugly by a hailstorm" business. Am I right to hesitate? Can anyone shed more light on this?

    Thanks in advance!

This type of exclusion usually only applies to metal roofs and the sorts where cosmetic has no bearing on the functionality of the roof. Honestly though, Id reach out to your agent and have them explain it in writing to you. Each company will be different and I think you're right to question it. Could be nothing, could be something. If your premium is reducing, you're giving up something. Just make sure its not something you'll need and only the agent will be able to give a definitive answer on this.

Had the same thing for my new impact resistant shingles. Doesn't really effect impact resistant shingles, since anything that damages the shingle enough to change its appearance is actually doing structural damage to the shingle. My neighbor has a metal roof, and he's got the same waiver. The back side of his roof has some golf-ball dimples on it, but since it's only cosmetic, insurance won't replace it.

    What those guys said.

Edit: Not just got metal roofs though, any metal. Vents, gtters, valley metal, flashing, etc.

    Okay, thanks.

I'll call them when I have extra time to kill, because they like to talk.

P.S. I don't have a metal roof. We had high-impact shingles put on in January of 2015. We DO have steel gutters, etc.

I don't know why, but my brain keeps reading your title as Cosmic damage verses cosmetic damage........
