Suggested Reading?

Suddenly EMP is looking more real. Granted the sun is always a possibility but that's in the same odds range as Yellowstone going off in our lifetime. Things changed yesterday after the North Korea ICBM test with a range that could hit Chicago, according to some. Even if they are wrong, it won't be long until Kim Fatso can drop one on Denver.

There is so much schlock in the preparation book world that it's hard to sort the wheat from the chaff. I know "One Second After" is the classic book on the subject but it's almost a decade old. What are fairly recent, well-researched books that are worth reading?

IMO, I believe that EMP threat is just slightly more legit than Y2K was.

This is based on my experience in Electronic Warfare and as an electronics/computer technician for over 30 years.

EMP is towards the bottom of the list as far as my preps are concerned, although I am prepared for longer term power outages.

You are probably correct; very low priority. But being trapped in our home for 9 days during the Boulder floods was low on our prep list until it happened (we did just fine). That experience, and wildfires, has made me rethink a lot of things. What I do know is help isn't coming soon.

A little of both I guess. My wife and I have already gone through two disasters (fire and flood), so I have a tangible feel for when things go bad. But would like to know more about when things go very bad, plausibly. Seems like a lot of the prepper reading material is for far-fetched "Red Dawn" stuff.

I've personally been in 2 100 year floods so far. I've been under 2 fire evacuation warnings and been a first responder multiple times to fires, floods, deaths, vehicle accidents etc just in daily life.

I think the reason for this is the majority of people aren't going to sit through a 300 page technical manual. The authors do want to entertain, but they also want to drive things home in a contextual fashion as well, to show the thought process behind things which people might face.

A lot of principles are the same, whether it be the far fetched or the mundane.

Just a note regarding One Second After, there have been two sequels to it that offer a lot more information. The latest one is from this year so it's not dated at all.
