Recommend Mover for out of state move...

Several of our members have done this, was looking for experience or advice with a company that can be trusted, and not get ripped off. Won't be leaving for at least 6 months yet, but I'd like to start talking to folks about what to expect, etc, etc.

6 months headstart? If you were us, that would be barely enough time.

I've been through several moves, and I've picked up a few tips. If you have a lot of stuff, start going through it now and begin eliminating. Set aside a space in your garage where you can begin storing heavy-duty moving boxes. Invest in several Sharpie markers and colored duct tape; assign a color per room so as you pack, you can put a big 'X' in orange tape on the side for your bathroom stuff. Movers are very helpful for gruntwork, but they're usually in a hurry to offload boxes and you'll get stuff for your garage in your bedroom unless it's clearly marked.

Pack your valuables in seperate boxes and keep them with you in your car. Stuff gets lost and damaged easily in moves.

Make sure your insurance is up to snuff and will cover moves.

Begin making a record of the condition of your goods; make a video on your phone or start taking detailed photos. It's also a good time to make an inventory...and will also give you a chance to offload 30+ screwdrivers that you didn't realize were in that drawer in your garage.

Now is also the time to start getting those appraisals that you've been thinking about.

When we moved from Maryland, the moving company had hired summer workers that were so stupid that breathing could have been classified as a complex activity. Seriously. I monitored two of them that grabbed drawers out of the kitchen, upended them in the box of glassware, and were genuinely confused when I screeched for them to stop. When you get your movers there, find out who the supervisor is and plug his number into your phone immediately. Don't hesitate to stop anyone from manhandling your stuff.

Also, if you have items that YOU pack in boxes, make sure they're not too heavy or laden.

Yeah, 10 years ago maybe. My body has gone to shit and I hurt more places than I care to. I'll purge items before move, but not everything.

Just getting my packing done and moving to temporary storage to get the house on the market will take enough toll on me as it is, and my job is a physically demanding one that I still have to perform. I don't mind paying for the Big Truck and dudes in their 20's wrecking their backs for when they're older....lol.

Then sell all the old furnishings, you know the wife would love you to death if she got new furniture and things with the new house.

Fun idea, but I'm more focused on an interstate moving company....

Sell or donate all your furniture, items that have no serious sentimental value. Keep the tools, guns and other items. Fil a POD with anything other than firearm related, bring guns in vheicle.

There's nothing furniture or electronic wise that cannot be purchased upon arrival. The less you bring, the more you save.


Now if we were to relocate, items could be transported to new house area and put in storage till you're final move. A few moves, while time consuming can save an easy $5-10K moving expenses.

I'm prepping for my eventual move, Place looks like a storage rental. Boxes piled everywhere so I can stub my toes at night hahaha

if you are willing to pack, the way to go is to use ABF (or similar)
you pack everything up in boxes (put it in the garage). Put tools and guns and ammo with you (rent a little trailer if you have to)

then you get a trailer from ABF. They just drop off a 28' trailer at your house and you have it for X long. Then you call local moving companies or just temporary services and hire some guys. (usually $50/hr/person insured, you want the insured part couple hundred bucks will easily do it)

then let them load up the trailer with all the boxes and furniture. DO NOT LET THEM PACK, YOU PACK.

Then ABF comes and moves the trailer out to your new location. (couple days probably), then you hire guys on the other end to run it out. (and I do mean run, amazing what 20 year olds can do)

cheaper than Uhaul, less work and way cheaper than a true moving company (although slower)
