    30 combined, pushing 40 on the highway...38.9.

    I went from a 5.9 CTD to a Tacoma.
I have a 16 TRDOR DCSB with an auto. Mine is fairly early for Gen 3, so I should theoretically have all sorts of problems, but I haven’t.
I have not done the tranny flash - mine has been fine. ECT isn’t power, but it does seem to smooth out the shift points, so I use it sometimes.
The crawl modes are gimmicky, but I did use them in Moab and they work. You don’t need them. In fact, I only used them to check it out.

I tow a 2300lb (dry) t-series hard-side pop-up and use a scanguage to monitor trans temp. Towing, even over Ike and Vail pass didn’t really produce much drama in temp, and I keep it at S4 and under towing. It isn’t like towing with a CTD.

The 3.5L is a different animal than the 4.0 in my ‘13 Tacoma, my 12 FJ, and my wife’s 16 4Runner. Much like when jeep made the switch, this one lives at higher RPMs, and so there is a very different feel than the normal low end and lower RPM torque.

The interior is much better than the Gen 2, but at 6’5”, I fit slightly better in my 13 SR5 with the MT.

I like it. I liked my CTD, but I like that this thing will park anywhere. Plenty of complaints all over Tacomaworld, but plenty of really happy folks who just have nothing to complain about. For a while, they couldn’t keep them in stock. I had to try to order and I waited 2 months for mine, but I wanted the orange.
    Obviously not a golfer.

I have a 17 trd off road. I like having a small truck since I don't haul anything and the smaller bed suits my needs. I really like the truck, BUT won't be keeping it since it has shifting issues that Toyota is well aware of. Brought it in to get the transmission shifting updated, didn't help. Now I've noticed every once ands while if I hit the gas from a dead stop it cuts in and out like it's not getting fuel which is annoying. Anothe thing I don't like is the lack of backseat space, it's tight for my daughter with her car seat and she's only 3 and small for her size. When my lease is up I'll be looking at the new Ford Ranger Raptor or Bronco. Good luck with your decision it is a very nice truck despite the issues, I know people that have them and don't have any transmission issues.

I bought a 16 Tacoma, sold it 8 months later. Junk, never again. It would shift 20 times a mile, vibrations and poor gas milage 14.5-16. Toyota did nothing to fix the problem, and yes I got several updates. Update would fix it for a week then right back to shifting.

Gotta' keep adding gears to keep up those EPA numbers. Is 10 enough? Maybe 12 will do it.

That Ford Ranger Raptor sounds interesting. Will be keeping an open ear for more information on it., though I’m afraid that the dealers will add $10K Premium to the price.

Did the excess shifting happen during the test drive or did it develop later?

Whatever you buy, put a large transmission fluid cooler on it. 90% of transmission problems are due to fluid overheating.
