Tube mag explosion?

Has anyone ever known anyone to have a tube mag on a lever gun "blow up" from recoil or dropping the gun, causing the rounds in the mag to set themselves off?

I'm a recent, first time lever gun owner and a few gun people I know have told me this is a thing, but I've never heard of it before. Seems to me that tube mags would have gone the way of the horse and buggy if this were the case.

Yes, it is why round nose softpoint projectiles are common on 30-30 rounds.
Not much of a problem on lever guns that load thru the receiver opening.
However, some tube fed guns have a spring loaded follower that must be retracted manually to insert rounds.
DO NOT let that follower go and have it smack down on the rounds in the feed tube!

Not so much a magazine issue as the bullet technology changed after tube magazines came about issue . They were designed in the days of round nose bullets and were never intended to be used with pointed spitzer type bullets .

Round nose stacked against a primer not an issue , pointy nose stacked against a primer is an issue . Like all tube magazines , shotgun , rimfire , centerfire the ammo stack moves under recoil against spring tension . So the points of spitzer bullets slam in to the primers as the gun recoils and we all know what happens when pointy things impact primers .

Load, shoot, enjoy. I have 1/2 doz levers that work fine with JHP, FP, etc. If you're concerned run JHP's.

Round nose, flat nose and hollowpoint bullets work fine. No pointy nosed.

You didn't say what rifle and caliber, but tube-fed leverguns usually aren't too fond of SWC and WC type bullets either. They're not dangerous, just don't feed well.

But in .45-70 and some others, a lot of guys use Hornady Leverevolution ammo and bullets. They're pointed, but have plastic "gummy tips" which makes them tube-mag safe.

3 suppressed 357's ( 1 old, 1 new rossi & 1 older marlin carbine) running both 38 & 357 length swc's & FP. The 38 is somewhat sketchy with lead while powder coated is ok. I upgraded with Steves gunz heavier mag tube spring & followers, polished contact surfaces especially the ramp. How a stock out of box runs, they did ok prior to upgrades, better now.

Yes, .45-70. I have those Honady Leverevolutions and some flat nosed reloads that came with the gun. I'll probably stick with the HL's.

Anything without out a hard point will work . Ran both round nose and the flat nose out of my guide gun with no issues . Hornady did the leverevelution to get a bullet with a better BC .
