Default Looking for a place to shoot

I just moved from L.A. about 3 months and I’m looking for a place to shoot outdoors on BLM land. I live in Thornton but don’t mind driving 45 mins to an hour to place where I can set up my own steel and paper targets.

There were a lot of spots in CA in the high desert areas and sometimes they were literally right off the highway.

It would be cool to meet up with you guys one weekend and shoot it up.

IMO for now find an indoor range while the fire danger is extreme.

Then take the time to sign in over here.

    After that try this icon

to do some looking around for more info. The many outdoor ranges & clubs offer varied shooting comps throughout the year, if you're interested in competing, or just to meet fellow shooters.

The only thing I miss about CA. is being able to drive an hour out of town and shoot on BLM land. Born and raised in Riverside.

We just returned from California early this morning, on our way out there a couple weeks ago, we saw folks shooting from the 15, they were far enough from the highway to be safe (and legal I'm assuming), but close enough to be seen (they were of course shooting away from the highway into a berm). I thought it was the coolest thing, don't recall where it was exactly, somewhere in the desert of CA between Vegas and Barstow.

The western slope is better suited for random off the road shooting. The front range is mostly private property and even then if you find a forest service spot there are so many homes, hikers and so on around that it is likely someone will call the police on you. The best bet is to find a secluded spot up at the Pawnee grasslands. Look up the forest service website as there are areas of Pawnee that are closed to shooting permanently as well as the occasional fire danger closures. Get a map as well to be sure that the spot you are on is public land as there is a fair amount of private property even within the grasslands. Be sure you have a good backstop and that there aren't any random cattle over the next Hill. Carry equipment to put out a grass fire if one should start.

Haha! I know exactly where that. It’s Hodge Rd, right off the 15 freeway before Vegas. It’s no secret, but the ppl that go there keep it clean by picking up all the brass for reloading since getting ammo is harder now in CA.

Now that you mention it, that is exactly where it is! Love CA, wish politics were better there.

Do folks still go up by Echo Mountain? Moving back to Aurora from a couple years in the Springs and that used to be a fav spot before too much trash (people and inanimate objects) kinda ruined kthe area.

Colorado Rifle Club is under $100 a year, can set up your own steel on the back berm of the Hi-Power range, and there is one target there as well (1045) Silhouette goes from too close to 550 on steel.
