Default Hunting buddies near Ward, Estes, Allesnpark, Nederland

We lived here in the late 80's around Estes, Longmont, Greeley, and Allesnpark until my daughter graduated. We then had to move back to Texas to take care of our aging parents. After my dad passed we bought a place between Ward and Brainard Lake at almost 10k ft. (About due west of Boulder in the mountains.) This is not for the weak or those who don't want to haul their own water, chop 10 cords of wood for the winter, or throw truckers chains on every time you go to the store which is either Nederland, or an hour down to Longmont or Boulder. So you can understand that I don't mind my hunting being a little rough around the edges.

I reload, shoot, and as I said, like to hunt and fish but am having to reacquaint myself with the area, hunting rules, and things like that. I understand one can typically buy an over the counter tag for locations such as near Steamboat as these are rougher areas to access. Fine by me. I am 64 and ready to hike and camp as necessary to get that prize.

Anybody else around this area interested in talking and buddying up to hunt or reload talk, etc..? (PS - I am a church attending Baptist who doesn't drink or smoke, but I've been there and done that if you know what I mean. I just don't do it any more, so if you are offended by talking about the Holy Spirit, you probably won't like being around me. Other than that I am not a prude and our pastor knows that some Sundays might be needed for hunting or fishing trips out of town.)

I'm in Boulder.. OTC elk is good for GMU 38 which is Rollins Pass Road and to the south. I've hunted up there for archery. There are Elk but they are elusive and if you go on a weekend you will run in to a dozen other hunters. Other than that I could have come up with a grouse or two each time I went up there.. maybe I need to start grouse hunting. A lot of moose sign, seen a few mule deer though that is a draw tag. I'd like to find some good turkey spots, I've seen them on Peak to Peak near Allenspark but didn't find anything last spring.

We saw a flock of 15-20 strutting on the east side of Peak to Peak near Riverside about two months ago. The two weeks ago in the same area 4 moose crossed in front of us on the way to church in Estes, so they are here but it will be a while before I can draw this area. I have been thing about scouting 18. They had several hundred OTC available there. It was pointed out by the fellow who taught our Hunter Ed course and he said that he has friends from Ill. who come over and take 3-4 elk almost every year from that area.

Wow, thank your lucky stars for your good health! I'm 63, and feel lucky I can still walk. Had 3 lumbar surgeries, afraid I'm looking at a 4th. And this might be a big one, disc replacement/vertebrae fusion - I don't know.

But hiking, hunting, and deer dragging or backpacking don't seem to be in the cards for my future......
There's a lot more of us ugly mf'ers out here than there are of you pretty people!

Sorry to hear than my friend. I was just rubbing my hands with DMSO and Lidocane because of Mr. Arthur Itis. In the past two days I have fallen 7 times on the ice. Once I thought I had really bit it. I thank God in Heaven that I could get up and keep going as we have to go into town and get water for our cistern. I do pray that this time won't be bad and that you heal quickly. Still, it isn't over until you have given up so my word to you is, don't give up. At least you can hunt and hopefully you will find someone who is willing to go with you and do the chopping of firewood and hauling of the meat back to your vehicle. I was surprised to find that there are a lot of younger hunters who are willing and able to do the physical work in exchange for the knowledge we have.
