I've got supplies to do my CMP special stock, following instructions I found on the cmp forums for a quick, attractive and durable finish. The rifle I saw that used it matched the color on my old WWII USGI 1903A3 stock very well. I wouldn't use this method on an actual old stock, but for a new stock, it looked like it did really well.

1. Apply Minwax wood conditioner to assure even stain penetration (very important step)
2. One coat USSR stain (stain blend sold by a guy on the CMP forums)
3. One coat Minwax Neutral #209 (to highlight the grain)
4. Two coats Minwax Tung Oil Finish

The "USSR" stain is stain blend sold on the CMP forums classifieds page.
