Mint Cinnamon is my first foray into the world of Linux, so I don't have any basis of comparison with Mate or other Linux flavors. There are a couple of other versions of Linux I'd like to mess around with, but I don't know if I have the time to get into them.

If there's nothing wrong with having to show an ID to buy a gun, there's nothing wrong with having to show an ID to vote.
For legal reasons, that's a joke.
Honestly, w/ the online ability of OneDrive Office, and the wealth of knowledge in the Linux forums, I see no need to run Windows anymore at home. I can always spin up a VM if I need it. I like being able to accept/deny various updates. I can run scripts easily (for example, I have a script which uses a program to scrub metadata from photos), etc.
We're so far beyond the days of needing to be a complete nerd to use Linux effectively, I don't know why anyone uses Windows at home aside from ignorance of the ease of use for most cases.

I think there's definately some validity to that, but with a multi-decade love/hate relationship with both Windows & Linux, I can say that there are valid reasons for either path...
Brief example(s) would be that yes, Linux is far easier for most people to use, and for the most part we're well beyond the point where it took a week of head-bashing and custom mods to headers/libraries/etc. in order to get basic shit to compile and run; however, Windows still has a place in many use case scenarios...
Yes, Linux is very easy to script operations, but Windows Powershell for example provides direct script/command-line acess to .Net namespaces/classes/functions, which brings all kinds of advanced operations into "scripting" reach without a prohibitive level of effort.
Also, VMs are great for all kinds of stuff, but some things flat out need direct access to hardware for performance reasons.
At this point, depending on usage, I run Windows 10 Pro (required for some things, a few of which will not run in a VM), an Ubuntu LTS variant or Kali on "desktop" systems, and minimal builds of either Ubuntu, CentOS, or Oracle linux on everything else (personal gear; excluding type 1 hypervisors).
ETA: Also keep VMs for all of the above (including Windows Server OS's) on non-system drives (desktops/laptops) - makes it easy to jump back and forth (or use a Unity mode) without having to reboot and switch base OS...

Yeah, I can see it both ways. In general, for most users, I see no need for Windows aside from fear of change. I recognize certain programs prohibit moving away from it.
I do very little in-depth stuff at home now that I'm done with the degree, but I like the ability to do what I want when I want to. Last time I touched my laptop was a few days ago and it was just to look up some google maps stuff since the phone was slow. The more in depth I get into stuff at work, the more I seem to shirk away from any technology at home. In a few years I reckon I'll be using a wood burning stove and carving my own ax handles

Mint is a little too pretty for me...Kali and Ubuntu LTS for various tools. The laptops I get for work are expensive, which are outside the discussion here although I do encourage people to get used business class laptops over the commercial crap they see on the shelves; my home desktops just get new systemboard/proc/memory as needed.
As far as windows; I have several licenses for it that I bought cheap on ebay. I have VMs loaded with it as well as dual boot on a few things. I need it for labs, sandboxing, and my stupid tax software. Other than that, I don't do much in it as a user. I can run most windows apps in wine.

Just upgraded the kitchen PC which was used for pic storage, recepies, occasional email. Went with an all in one because the small factor PC prices were funny. Old pc was 10 years old and too slow, cough cough vista, but it will make a great nas at some point.
For those that want to use old weak pcs, try Puppy Linux on a usb drive. Still learning about Linux, but my goal is to be windows free at some point.
Action Computers in Arvada sells business turn in laptops for cheap. Scrubbed of everything but Windows.
Is that the one that is owned by a former member of here?
