Ya... the Front Range is not the most free shooting range friendly place in the USA.

I have definately figured this out. However, if anyone knows of any spots say out east or southeast of Denver that would be great. The closest free spot that I know of close to Denver is on the backside of Guanella Pass above Georgetown. I want to go shooting without having to deal with Range Nazis and stupid people in general. All I am looking for is a open space on federal land with a backstop.

Okay, going through these posts I see repeated references to the "North Site" and a couple for the "South Site". Now, I do belong to a club (Cherry Creek Gun Club) but I get rather tired of the 'one shot at a time' rifle shooting there. It's great for sighting in or bolt action shooting, but I have AR's, a couple M14's, a FAL, M1, etc., that I'd really like to be able to shoot the way they should be (loading more than one round in the mag at a time!) and occasionally at targets that aren't just paper. Any chance someone could PM me and let me in on the location?

I am interested in club shoots, by the way, but it looks like the January shoot is on the 13th and I'll be out of town for that one. Feb or March look good though, and I'd be happy to bring my .458 SOCOM for Marlin to try out! I could assist with RSO duties if that would help, for the last several years I've been a Military RSO.

The north site is in the St. Vrain canyon about 200 yrds east of the intersection of 7 and 72..

The south site is on 67 just out of WP.. about 2 miles north of the Rainbow Falls CG or about 12 miles south of Deckers.. There is a little FSR with a stop sign on the west side of the road..

Just be aware that at the North site, you have to haul ALL of your stuff in and out, you can't really park near the shooting area. Big pain for me, I take all kindsa crap with me when I go blasting. Many guns, mucho ammo, table, chairs, sandbags, targets, on and on.....

And at the South site, the road going in is, shall we say, rather "robust". Been awhile since I've been there, and it was washout/rut city then. I wouldn't try it in a car, myself. Pickup at the least, 4wd would be best. JMHO, I'm sure others go in and out just fine.

Personally, I joined Ben Lomond. Great place to shoot, lots of clean, flat ranges, portajohns, pistol, rifle & shotgun ranges, cowboy range, and AFAIK nobody bugs you about shooting things like cans and plastic jugs full of water, as long as you clean up your mess. No range nazis, just go in and enjoy! It is kind of a drive, though. Just under an hour from my house in Parker. www.blgc.org
