Default VA Benefits Representive or just help in navigating the VA BS.

I have a buddy in NM that needs help navigating some VA bs red tape about a surgery that he needs (asap) along with someone to help with his getting the services he shouldnt have to fight for but since the VA sucks he does. Who / What / how have the vets here used successfully to gain what they needed. This gentilemen is a retired School teacher on limited income so all help is welcomed.

Unfortunately I can be of no help, just wanted to wish him luck. My brother needed surgery for a service related injury, and the VA preferred to pump him full of pain meds. I think the VA has improved since then, I hope.

I would have him start here: http://www.nmdvs.org/field-services/

Is he currently in the VA system? If not he can start by enrolling in the VA system and getting his ID card. It sounds daunting and like an impossible task to get VA benefits but it's really not. Much of it can be done online now. I went from submitting the application to a service connected rating in 6 months. Of course, I had all my ducks in a row including records and current medical diagnoses, but it's still less complicated than it sounds.

I'd definitely have him start with the state Veteran Services Officer. I did and it worked out well.

If this is an emergency type of procedure, he may have to look at other options...it will take some time.

I hope he gets what he needs.

What part of NM? I used the DAV and they did good work. Well one guy did good work one guy was just there to collect a check. My recommendation is to do both. Have him educate himself on the process but have someone help guide him. Trust but verify.

This is a decent site. http://www.militarydisabilitymadeeas...ityrating.html

I’ve found that the NMDVS is mostly useless for filing claims.limited staff and spend their time doing more stuff. If he’s in the ABQ area I can recommend a guy at the DAV that’s great at what he does.

If he's already in the system He's not locked in to being stuck with the VA. Have him call the VA and ask for the CITC Authorization paperwork .

That's a form the any doctor can use / fill out and fax back to the local VA. Once that's completed have him push them for the triwest referral to get in with the surgeon and or specialist. Unfortunately one has to pay out of pocket for seeing anyone other than a dr in the VA.

You or he can call me for more info.
