Default Super compact non tactical mag fed rifle.

    Thought excersise mostly.

Lets say you just turned 18 and are heading out on your own for work or school. You value the 2nd, and understand the benefits of having a firearm. Sine you are 18 handguns are mostly out, so a rifle it is. Your travels will take you to part unknown so a super duper ar15 tactical with proper mags is out and you are limited to fixed mags or 10 round detachable and trying to not look tacticool. You are a poor student or teenager so cheap ammo for practice is of importance. Compactness and storability is a must since its hard to incognito a full length rifle.

I'm thinking a takedown ruger 10/22 or marlin Papoose. Maybe a folddiwn rifle in 9mm.

    What are your thought?

Doesn’t one have to be 21 to purchase 9mm/any handgun ammo? If not, I’d say a Keltec sub2000. Fits in a backpack and doesn’t require putting it together to use it.

Also, don't count out some sort of lever action rifle as well. Even grandpas old 30-30 can be an effective weapon without that "tactical" scariness.

edit- not sue if the lever would qualify as super compact though.

I like the 10/22 takedown idea. The Ruger PCC could be an option as well as it isn't "tactical" looking, breaks down into two, parts like the 10/22, takes any Glock mag (26, 19, 17, etc.), and is chambered in 9mm instead of 22 LR.

9mm as an under-21 is tough.

Folding stock M1 carbine, but ammo ain't cheap, and you need minty mags to keep reliability up. Also not a super cheap platform.

I say 10/22 with minimags. Not great for hydraulic or pneumatic, but it'll do electrical and mechanical.

    9mm - because they don't make a 9.1mm

I was actually thinking a takedown would be nice.

Probably out of the budget for a young person like the OP is talking about.

Maybe a Mare's Leg might be an option...although technically a pistol.

Lee Hadaway does some amazing work. I am going to have him do 45-70 for me. What about a lever action in .357 or .44 mag? Non tactical, but yas a decent round count.

I feel like there are so many more important things for 18 year olds to be worrying about than some self defense rifle. Especially if they can't afford ammo.
