Haven't like 10x more people died in the US from this years flu than the Corona in China?

Edit: not to diminish the value of a mask or anything. I just read today how ridiculously overblown the Corona virus was compared to the flu that kills thousands every year in the US. Compared to the flu, Corona is high school football compared to the NFL. The media of course wants us all to freak out...

It's ignoring the danger of a Tiger because mosquito's technically kill "more" people. Influenza has a fatality rate of 0.1% and is highly treatable. 2019_nCov kills 25x as many - if you have a family of four, and you all get sick, the chance of at least one of you dying seems to be around 1 in 10.

Both viruses are technically in the coronavirus family. This is GOOD and VERY BAD news. The good news is, it'll probably be peaking soon and seem to go away.. just like influenza does every year in the spring and Summer, because the virus itself (probably) doesn't survive heat very well.

The bad news is, just like the flu, once fall/winter rolls around, then it'll start cycling again. Once any case is in south america or africa - which is possible even now - those continents alone will maintain a pool that will keep maintaining seasonal infections around the world now going forward.

So the reality is: You're not at risk of getting 2019nCov this year. However; you are at heightened risk next year, and it may be all but inevitable that you and your entire family get it within the next decade unless they are able to successfully vaccinate. The risk to your family will be roughly the same as if each of you got infected with a novel flu strain each and every consecutive year since 1995.

For anyone who doesn't believe this: Here's a shocker. Since SARS alone, there are two new novel "cold" viruses that circulate through our whole population. They are so common they don't even bother to test them - they don't kill people, usually, just cause colds, bronchitis, etc. So people today have to get sick far more often to be immune from just the normal gamut of diseases - many of our "colds" and "flus" didn't even exist 30 years ago. Now here's a third novel one that will be in common circulation since 2000, except it kills 1 / 25.

(To ETA: Most of deaths will likely be attributed to "influenza" on death certificates when it becomes common here)
