    Uh, what's that?

    A derecho is a line of intense, widespread and fast-moving windstorms and sometimes thunderstorms that moves across a great distance and is characterized by damaging winds.

    Seems like 100+ mph winds slamming down from the Niwot Ridge near Boulder is a similar experience. Colorado gets those a few times each year.

    Following up, I find

    In the last year or two, nonmeteorologists have been introduced to the terms bomb cyclone and snow squall.
    And now Colorado has experienced another rare weather phenomenon — derecho, pronounced de-REY-cho. Derechos are more commonly found in the Midwest.

    I worked for NOAA in the early 70's as a weather researcher, studying hail and thunderstorms. First time I have heard this term.
