Default HVAC help in COS: central AC no go

FIXED: capacitor was bad. Replaced and now works fine! First tech that came out from Company A said compressor was bad and noise was frozen something or other in compressor. I called another company for 2nd opinion and he looked at capacitor and said it?s bad. Replaced it and all is well!

Uncovered the outside unit and turned on the A/C and all I get is a noise. Kind of an electrical/grinding type noise. Compressor and fan won?t turn on...

Any HVAC folks here in COS? Or someone you trust and recommend?

    I?m clueless about HVAC stuff...

    Thx.

Is it the inside blower squirrel cage grinding ? Or is it the outside compressor & condenser fan ?
Nevermind, I reread your post. The outside unit is around M/L $1K. The installation of it is what will put a damper on your gun fund.

Standup folks. They handled our post-move/pre-sale inspection items that time we had a brain fart and thought Oklahoma was a good idea.

Very honest folks. The owner, Jim, was who we dealt with.

Hopefully it's something small like a capacitor.

Depending on the age of the outside unit, replacing it will likely mean replacing the entire system including the inside evaporator. Changes to wet charge freon requirements have made the old dry charge freon extremely expensive, and the older units are no longer made and hard to find. New units are also more expensive due to regulatory requirements making 14 Seer the minimum efficiency.

We ended up replacing the furnace at the same time to remove some filtering limitations created by the home builder and take advantage of newer variable speed DC blower technology.

Our bills went down appreciably, and our comfort levels are much better, but that initial investment was painful.

Check to make sure fan blade on outside condenser unit didn't come loose and slide down.

By the way, What does electrical grinding sound like.......
Do you mean electrical arcing ? Locked rotor loud humming ? Fan blade chewing something up ? Compressor or fan motor bearings grinding ? Relay contacts chattering ? Can you post a sound bite ?

Most likely a capacitor. Could be a contractor
