Default Anyone brave enough to buy used tires?

Have the wifes old juke that's being used as a beater this winter and maybe next. Trying to be a cheap ass and not spend $350 on a new set of snow tires when that's 10% of the value of the car and hopefully only 1-2 seasons.

Is there a reasonable shot at buying used tires anywhere that arnt in the last 20% of the life of the tire?

Discount, from what they say, have stringent standards before they sell a used tire.

I've done used tires many times, but they were usually "Take offs" where someone was trading up tires / wheels on a new car.

I've heard with snow tires, that Blizzaks (and a few other "special" snow tires) only have their maximum ice traction compound for the first 40% of treadware, then they are basically just standard snow tires.

I'd verify any used tires I get don't have any punctures or sidewall damage, have decent treadlife left (At least 6/32"), have pretty even wear across the tire, and be fairly even wear from tire to tire (within 2/32" of each other).

All the time, both from tire shops (BigO, Discount) and from individuals.

Just learn how to read date codes and what to look for (cracks, dry rot, etc) and you'll be good.

I have bought 2 sets of winters for the family cars. Both came with rims and were silly cheap compared to getting a new set, like $50 for rim and $50 for tire. Look on CL, buy a reputable brand, make sure no cracks and that the year on the tire is not old.

Fifteen inch wheels may or may not fit. Sometimes vehicles have 17, 18, or whatever wheels not just for looks but to clear the brake system components.

Also, in my youth I would always buy takeoffs from my local tire shop. Last set was bought off a buddy?s neighbor. He bought a new truck and at about 1,200 miles he did a lift kit and bigger wheels and tires. I think I gave him $150 for the full set of wheels and tires because he wouldn?t be using them and they were taking up space in his garage.
