Was it just one crazy trick that professional welders don't want you to know about?

Yep. That was pretty much the trick. I guess the aluminum dissipates heat really quickly and all I was getting was shitty welds and splatter. Heated everything up with a torch and it welded beautifully.

Is there a certain temp target you're shooting for?

Not sure. I just heated my work until it was too hot to touch and laid down the weld.

I want to do more stuff with aluminum with my spool gun. I was considering an aluminum roof rack, but now I'm not sure since I want to build a 270 awning to put up there. The awning design I'm looking at only weighs 36lbs with steel and a Harbor freight tarp. That's not bad, but I don't know how well an aluminum rack would hold up. I don't know enough to know if I could make the awning out of aluminum as well. That'd be cool, but I bet expensive.

That is some serious redneck engineering shit right there. You should live in Alabama. Well done, mister.

What's the point of getting a different grill if I can't take the side burner, that I've never once used, with me, right?

I don't actually think it applies to this specific situation... But...
