    Sounds like what happened to my Chevy Colorado. Dealer charged me 360 bucks to change out the VVT solenoid. Engine would start, noisy and no power. Changing out the VVT was so easy a caveman could do it. The variable valve solenoid would be would be $30 at rockauto.com
    The VVT was attached by one bolt and in a easy location. One electrical plug attaches to the end of the solenoid. Remove & replace would have taken ten minutes
    Truck had 135K miles when the VVT failed.

    Can I ask, what motor in the 2014 Ford Explorer? And mileage?

    3.5L V6 Ecoboost. Only 50K.

    VERY early timing chain problems are a known problem with this engine and year. Ford issued some significant TSBs regarding it.
