Default Broken tailgate latch on truck?

**All good getting the cover rolled back. Now the fun comes of taking apart the tailgate to replace the lock/latch-woohoo.**

I have a 2010 Nissan Titan, went to drop the tailgate a little while ago and noting happens. Manual lock on it, tried unlocking it, the plastic around the handle is loose. Oh and to make it a pain to get to I have a bedcover that I can't roll back because.......I can't open the tailgate ahahaha no.

This old photo I found is what mine looks like:

    Here's the cover:

Before I call the place I got the cover I was wondering if anyone here has knowledge about these covers and if there's a way to unlatch it with the tailgate up without destroying anything......though that would negate one of the purposes of having the cover. I just love a good conundrum!! I don't need to get in to the bed right now but I don't like not being able to as that prevents me from checking/replacing the lock.

    Meh, why bother?
You can’t haul anything with it anyway.

    I kid

Uh, I don't understand how this is a problem with the Tuxedo cover, but rather with the Nissan tailgate latch. I'm interested because the tailgate latch on my '03 Tundra is getting weak so I'd like to learn of your fix. I've hit my tailgate latch with WD 40 a few times which helped for a while but maybe it needs a new spring or something.... Thank goodness it's not China made electronic actuated crap.

Stop using wd40 as a lubricant.

Thanks for the help lol. I take the blame for bad title. So the tailgate latch is broken-can’t unlock it. The bed cover is locked closed in position covering the bed. I couldn’t get the cover opened to tackle the broken latch/lock. Thanks to the guys at AA Toppers where I bought the LoPro I have some info on getting the cover open. If I can’t get it, they’re happy to help me on Friday.

WD40 hasn’t been anywhere near the truck

If it's the lock, try these...

#1- Flat head screwdriver. Knock it in with a hammer and turn it with vice grips. You can likely shear the pins in the tumbler.

#2- Slide hammer. Thread a screw in as far as you can and give it a couple pulls. The tumbler may pop out.

It sounds like the latch itself may have broken. If so you'll probably need a drill and a screwdriver. Drill holes in the plastic so you can break enough pieces to access the rods inside the tailgate. pull them inwards and it will open.

I'll ask my guy at Nissan if he has any insight.

Thanks! If I can get the bed cover unlocked I can get to the back side of the tailgate to unbolt everything otherwise that sounds like my only other option. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
