They work. I have a couple around and have an AR pistol hanging from one on my safe door. Look for rubberized coatings to prevent scratches as well as large contact areas. I don't think I've seen one that doesn't come with mounting screws.

I got mine off Amazon but a quick search brought some up at Cabela's and Sportsman's. Mine are similar to this one just for reference.
