It is a labyrinth that traps everything airborne. Add a spill and you can have organic growth problems- mold, bacteria, etc. You don't know what the previous owner had in the house that could have been an allergen to you or others in your family.
And I don't care what Coit says, their vacuums are never going to pull out all the crud that has made it into the pad.
Two things I recommend to every new homeowner. Replace the carpet and clean the ducts.
