Default Can a bad battery cause a car to die even with good alternator?

Low battery voltage this morning (~9V) and no start. After a jump, it starts, runs for a bit then begins rougher idle,.slower rpm, and then dies. Dash meter shows ~14V when running.

    Thoughts?

Maybe the alternator stops working after a while? But if battery is old start there.

    Houston, we have a problem...

Battery is 2/17 production red top Optima. When I tried to take off the negative terminal for cleaning, the post pulled out of the battery and is just barely connected to the guts inside.

    Oops...

Luckily, the battery out of my truck will fit temporarily and the vehicle seems to be working OK now.

    Thanks!

They aren't built like they used to be. Cars do all kinds of weird stuff when the battery is hosed no.
My mother-in-law's would run off a jump right until my Li-ion jumper timed out, then it would just die.

Yeah the newer cars do all sorts of weird stuff with a low/dead battery, my Fianc? drives a 2017 Outback and her battery took a crap recently, the car went haywire, running like shit, dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree. Replaced the battery, and all was good.

Ouch, hopefully it is not open and leaking when you have to take it in for the core charge.

As you've already discovered, the short answer is yes. I've not had an alternator problem since the 90s. But a wonky battery causes all sorts of random issues.

The Optima Oribtal went to shit quality a few years before the date on yours. Don’t pay the outrageous price for them now.
they are crap, relying on the name and brand recognition instead of reliability.
And as others have said, modern cars go haywire with low/bad batteries that won’t hold a charge.
My T.P. wheeling and dealing feedback is here.

Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one, and it stinks more than mine.

Just went through this with a bad odyssey battery that was just 1 year 2 months old. None in stock anywhere, fortunately bought it through 4wheelparts and they offered an optima red top in exchange. Optima had like. 1/4” of dust on top of it, so it had been sitting on a shelf for a while. Truck started right away but would not idle. Would run at 1100 rpm or more, but died at idle. Drove truck around for about 45 minutes to charge battery and haven’t had issues since. This was two weeks ago.

Supposedly some alternators do not charge at low rpm. My brother has had the same issue with his two chevy trucks, new battery low charge and they wouldn’t idle.

As a sidenote, I am glad I bought the battery through 4 wheel parts. If I had used amazon, no battery manufacturer will honor warranty as amazon is rife with counterfeits.

Costco sells the interstate AGM batteries. 3 year warranty with no questions asked.
