    Default 1911 Book

    I bought another 1911.

I have been looking at all the ways to build one on my own but need to know much more about the intricacies of the components.

I want to buy a book or two but there are a million of them out there. I am not looking for the basics, rather something an aspiring smith could use as a reference.

    Anyone have some recommendations?

FWIW: I like Kuhnhausen's books................ mainly a book from a Gunsmiths POV.

For any real fanatic of the 1911-such as myself lol-The Vickers Guide Vol. 1 & 2 are pricey but worth it-by Larry Vickers. I especially like Volume 2. Vol 2 does a deeper dive on the custom built pistols. I’d loan you mine but still haven’t gotten them back from the friend that borrowed them in January hahaha.

There’s a lot to a custom 1911 than more than swapping parts but you know that. The friend I sold my 1980 built Bill Wilson Colt to in 1984 that I competed with for 4 years still has it. The only part replaced since new has been the extractor. Crazy.

Fitting, lots of fitting, by hand. Tweak this, loosen or tighten that, different H/T/S, or a combo of 1-3 of them. Then there's the tools one must have for said project.

Kuhnhausens books are the gold standard. I have Wilson’s book Building the Ultimate Handgun or something like that and while decent, pales in comparison to Kuhnhausens references.
