Barnes bullets

I feel guilty for never loading any of their bullets. Years ago I remember some customers at the gun shop talking about the founder of Barnes bullets sizing bullets through a piece of rail road track. Yes the track was used for a sizing die. Barnes bullets was started in Bayfield just out of Durango. Anyways, anybody loading their bullets. If I was going to Africa I would sure have some of there solids loaded. Are there match bullets any good?

Today marks 13 years ago that we sold Barnes Bullets. We owned Barnes Bullets for 34 years.. It was such a hard decision selling something that was our baby. We purchased the small 2 man company in 1974. All we knew was that we wanted to own our own business and building bullets seemed like something we wanted to try since we loved hunting and shooting.
We had no business experience, no money to grow a business and just high school educations. I had some business school experience.
We lived and worked in our 480 square foot house in American Fork, Utah that we had purchased when we got married for $3500.00 that also had a basement.
The bullet company was in the basement. Our two daughters Jessica and Chandra slept in the one bedroom in the house and we slept on a hide a couch in the front room for a few years. It is a true wonder we made this work but I have to say we had the right attitude of making it work no matter what and we had incredible family support along with our two young daughters that worked with us also.
Randy and I both run bullet presses – mostly very antiquated. He did the machine work and various other jobs to make bullets. I did the packaging, shipping, accounting, inventory, ran bullet presses, talked to bankers which sometimes wasn’t very pleasant we well as cleaned and cooked. On the weekends I passed out yogurt and cottage cheese samples at the store across the road from our tiny place of business to help put food on the table. We did whatever it took to make ends meet.
We eventually built a 1200 sq. foot building in the back of the house and then the girls moved downstairs into their own bedroom and we finally had our own bedroom.
As the business grew we added on another 3500 sq. ft. building. We soon outgrew all of that and Then moved to Lindon, Utah in a 45,000 sq. ft. building which we outgrew and then built a facility in Mona, Utah of 80,000 sq. ft. in April of 2009. Shortly after that move we sold the business but still worked for the corporation that purchased us for 5 years and then retired.
We are so proud of the company we built along with our family, and employees of course along with great support from the shooting and hunting industry. It couldn't be what it is today without the help from so many others.
In 1989 we introduced to the market the X-Bullet. It was truly revolutionary to the industry. Randy designed the bullet. He was so good at thinking outside the box and even though it took a little time for people to accept this innovative bullet it finally got the attention it deserved. As time went on changes and improvements were made to the X-Bullet which are now called TSX and Tipped TSX. This innovative bullet is another important reason why the company is where it is today.
The company has since been sold to the Clarus Corp. that also owns Sierra Bullet Co. We of late sold the building and some land to Clarus for Barnes to expand and we are looking forward to seeing them really grow and prosper in the next short while.

I've used their bullets for years. For big game, just remember, they typically need an impact velocity about 2200 fps to open and work.

Gosh, that's a disappointment. I hope that any entity taking ownership will retain the Barnes line of bullets and cartridges. I've used the Barnes Vor-Tex 120gr in 7mm-08 on two CO moose, two buck mulies and pronghorn. All DRT. It's been a superb performer. Glad I still have a couple of boxes.

My insider source said the ammo production of Barnes and Sierra was the beginning of the end. Ammo companies pulled back on their use of their bullets once they became competitors. The folks who made those choices are long gone. This might actually be a good thing. Time will tell.

Thanks for the info, Mark. I think the little 120gr. in 7mm-08 are the schnitz. I haven't found any other factory ammo in that loading.
