Quitting Before Deployment: In early 2005, as his unit prepared for mobilization to Iraq, Walz abruptly quit, leaving his fellow soldiers without leadership. His rationale—claiming he needed to retire to run for Congress—has been challenged by the retired sergeants major, who argue he could have sought permission to run while remaining in service.
    Holy shit.

How does someone even quit the Army? Especially just prior to deployment? How was that even allowed to happen?

He submitted his retirement packet and HRC approved it, or whatever the NG equivalent is.

Despite the fact he still had 2 years left on his contract. Meanwhile the Leftist media is pissing all over people like Vance and Gabbard who actually went to the sandbox because they're not supporting The Agenda. I'd like to get more background on Walz's time with the NG; I've known good people who shift from active duty to NG or Reserves (one guy got shafted by the RIF as an O-3 and ended up as an O-8 in the Reserves) and I've seen people who sign up for the NG figuring it's a low risk way to pad their resumes or get some benefits at the end.

I’m not disagreeing. But, he didn’t just go awol. He retired. That had to go through the channels to do so, even if helped along.

I don’t like the guy. I think he’s a scuzzy weirdo. Regardless of that he put in a retirement packet and it was approved. Without assistance from someone who could influence it to get waivers signed, corners cut, and a very liberal understanding of commander’s discretion on how to implement a regulation? No idea.
