Denver has built a reputation as a city where new immigrants can find legal help and maybe even a job without constant fear of authorities. The mayor pledged to continue to protect undocumented immigrants. "I think we are gonna continue to be a welcoming, open, big-hearted city that's gonna stand by our values," Johnston said.

"More than us having DPD stationed at the county line to keep them out, you would have 50,000 Denverites there," Johnston said. "It's like the Tiananmen Square moment with the rose and the gun, right? You'd have every one of those Highland moms who came out for the migrants. And you do not want to mess with them."


Tom Homan, President-elect Trump's pick for "border czar",- said he is willing to put Denver Mayor Mike Johnston (D) in jail over his vow to protect migrants in the city after Trump promised a mass of deportations - particularly in sanctuary cities... "But, look, me and the Denver mayor, we agree on one thing. He's willing to go to jail, I'm willing to put him in jail," he added.


Johnston has never come across as a particularly intelligent guy and this does nothing to change that.
