Default You're invited to the 1911 Addicts (West) Shoot, NRA-Whittington 4-5 October, 2025

Hey Colorado AR-15 shooters, you are invited to attend the 1911 Addicts forum (west) group shoot. NRA-W is top-notch - we've always had a blast here. Here is the originally posted thread on the 1911 Addicts Forum: https://www.1911addicts.com/threads/...4#post-3642754

FYI if you are local (or within driving distance), you do not need to stay overnight if you want to come for the Saturday to shoot that is fine, however if you do want to stay - we'll need to make arrangements for lodging. A 1911 is not required, we all shoot pistols and rifles of nearly every make and model.

Here are some particulars from the original thread below:
What: 2025 1911 Addicts West Shoot
Where: NRA Whittington, Raton New Mexico. NRA Whittington Center : The Country's Premier Shooting Facility
When: 4-5 October 2025 (check-in is available late afternoon on Friday, 3 October)

Let me know here by message who plans to attend. Please go online and fill out the NRA-W waiver form NRA Whittington Center : Waiver Form. IIRC for non-members, there is a $25 per person, per day range fee - or a $50 individual yearly membership. There is also a $75 annual family membership.

    Lodging:
@Colorado Sonny (member on 1911 Addicts forum) was gracious enough to book and hold the reservations for us so we'll be working through him (on this thread) for arrangements. The Founders Cabins (Leupold and Thompson) for accommodations. NRA Whittington Center : Founders Cabins. Cabins have four rooms and a common kitchen and sitting area. Rates are $100 per night per room (up to 2 people) and $125 per night - per room up to 4 people. Reach out to @Colorado Sonny for dibs on rooms. FYI, the cabins have bed linens but not toiletries or towels so plan to bring your own. 1738441279460-png.1711398

    Ranges:
Main event - as usual, we booked the Star pistol range for the main event on Saturday, October 4th. NRA Whittington Center : STAR Range

Optional depending on anticipated participation (this range is more logistically intensive). For those who want to stay for more shooting, we booked the 1000 yd range for Sunday October 5th. NRA Whittington Center : High Power Rifle 1000 Yard Range If the group decides we'd rather do something else (i.e. shotguns) we can work that out instead.

    Meals:
NRA-W no longer maintains the cafeteria (unless there is a major event). We will need to make arrangements for breakfast at the cabins or in town. (more to follow) Each cabin has a common kitchen but minimal (or no) cookware, dishes or silverware. We?ve cooked there in the past but if we choose to do that, we?ll need to plan to bring everything necessary for cooking and cleaning.

Tentative Schedule: All this is flexible, I can work with Ashley for a different Sunday range if we don't like the idea of shooting some long range rifles.

    Friday 3 October:
    Check-in is available at 1500.
Let us know who plans to arrive Friday to coordinate check-in. Let?s plan to meet for dinner in Raton. Suggestions? It?s very likely there will be a cigar /whiskey/scotch icebreaker at one of the Cabins afterward.
    Saturday, 4 October:
    0800: Star Range set-up
    0900: Range is hot
1100 -1200 Lunch: Let?s plan to do lunch on the Star Range. This is always great time.
1700: Range goes cold and clean up
1800: Dinner in town. A couple years ago we went to diner at the Casa Lemus Restaurant in Raton on Saturday evening - we could try that again. Casa Lemus Restaurant There are picture of this restaurant in one of the earlier West shoot threads.
2000: Cabin patio get together....plan on an after dinner cigar and whisky/scotch session at the lodges that evening.

Sunday, 5 October: (depending on participation)
    0800: Set up 1000 yd high-power range.
    0900: Range is hot
    1600: Range goes cold
(folks can head out of town earlier if necessary or if we have enough interest we can arrange to stay overnight Sunday)

Hope you decide to come and shoot with us, DM if you have questions. Give me a few days to respond because I'm checking this account sporadically.

I cannot tell you just how much I love this event. It is one of my favorite times of the year. Great people, beautiful facilities, a good time had by all.

Every gun matters and is welcome to this, whether they are a 1911 or identify as one or any other possible combination of identities. Where else can you shoot steel plate to 200 yards with your handgun, then immediately transition to high angle shooting on steel plate at 500 yards with your rifle, without ever having to leave your bench?

I will have a Garmin Xero and a LabRadar with me if you've ever been dying to know how your fancy pet load chronographs. I will have the stuff to rebarrel an AR onsite if that is what you need. There will be revolvers, long rifles, short rifles, alien rifles, and every manner of 1911 you could possibly come across, all with great people who are eager to share and fun to talk about gun stuff with.

For those of you who have been around long enough, this feels like the upgraded version of when we all used to gather at the Pawnee Grasslands or the South Site, except nobody will have to lie in a ditch with a plate over their head because morons set up their shooting perpendicular without looking over the hill. And also no 'off roading' tickets for parking 11 feet from the road. So a win for everyone.

I very sincerely hope as many of you weirdos will join us as possible. I will be driving down from Windsor and will be glad to convoy or offer a ride for anyone who is interested. If it is a financial hardship, I will help defer your room costs and let you shoot (some of) my ammo. Depending on how much time I have before the shoot, I will even provide an apple pie.

It just doesn't get any better than this. Please sign up, join, and have an old-school good time with your shooting friends!

I am going to try to make it down. Hopefully the forest fires will be a little mellow by then.

    Update:
The lodging goes very fast at NRA-Whittington, in fact the place usually books for the year by 1 February.

We've exceeded our booked rooms in the founders cabins, however there are still accommodations in the smaller cabins.

There are ten log cabins available, and they are across the road from the founders' cabins. They have five bunk beds and a bathroom in each cabin. it would be $20 person, per night with a minimum of four people. So even if you have three folks in the cabin, it'll cost $80 - go to https://www.nrawc.org/lodging-cabins...ng/log-cabins/. The floor plan looks like this: https://www.nrawc.org/media/4218/log...floor-plan.jpg

    Update:

(3/4/25) Due to the response, we booked an additional 4 of the smaller log cabins.

Shoot me a PM if you have questions.

If you have been there in the past month or so and shot at the Star range and saw the targets on left hand slope are painted yellow……you’re welcome

I’d be interested in this event.
I could help out, Range Safety etc. Shooting too of course.

Put my annual membership to some use.
But to warn you, I’m showing up with my bone stock Rock Island Armory 1911 for any of you snobs!

Will any .45 ACP work, or is it just pistols?

We are open to all calibers. We may mock your skills though. Unless you shoot better than we do, in which case we will mock your taste in clothing or booze.
