Does it help safety? No, because if you are going to be rear-ended, it does not normally matter where the cars in front of you are.

All this practice achieves, is pissing off other drivers, making them miss the light, and blocking them from the turn lane.

Some people have figured out how to not get upset and get through the light.

Lane filtering. It?s awesome.

Of course some compensating slow a$$ cage drivers ( normally compensating men in 4x4s) get pissed and try to harass riders doing something perfectly legal. Some like to try and get a close to a bike from the rear as possible when the bike moves to the front of the line legally.
