    Default Making Fire from Ice

This process is a bit involved but interesting knowledge none the less. Here is how you can make fire from an ice lens.

You should be able to use a microwave to boil it pure as well. I believe this is the same as when you boil water and pour it between two cups repeatedly. You'll remove all the contamination allowing you to bring the water right up to 212 deg F. If you do this, and then drop a (not steril) spoon into the water, the water will "explode"... all the contamination on the spoon will transition from solid to gas immediately.

That sounds like I'll have to try that.

Google it first to make sure I have the details right!

This is probably old news (maybe I even saw it here?) but you can make a fire starting mirror with the bottom of a coke can and some chocolate to polish it.

I recently bought a .eu military surplus volcano stove. Using a cut-up bottom of a coke can to hold pure grain alchohol gets the ~2 cups of water up to a boil in just a few minutes.

distilled, pure, H2O will react like this at 212 degrees F. It doesn't exactly explode, but reacts quite violently. Other pure substances do this also, but not many. H2O is just flat out weird stuff chemically, and is most dense when in it's liquid state. I can't remember why pure water reacts violently when heated, but I think it had something to due with the density and being molecularly polar.

Regardless, don't try this. You get boiling hot water everywhere. Someone could lose an eye or skin or something. Then where would you be; all physically deformed and the neighbor kids will make fun of you and call your Freddie... No good can come of this.
Mom's comin' 'round to put it back the way it ought to be.

Anthony Hopkin's character mentions this method (roughly) in "The Edge" ... which is sweet movie if you get the chance to watch it.

    Yea totally!
I'm sure I'll try it under safe lab-like conditions. How about chem apron, welding sleeves, face shield, helmet, steel toes, and heavy gloves. Mythbusters ballistic shield, and high speed camera. You can eagerly await my next post from the ER.
