Okay, the spouse and I piled on movie goodness this weekend:

Star Trek: Beyond- I enjoyed this very much. We saw it in the theater, and it looks very good on the big screen. If you're a die-hard fan that is hung up on the reboot, you'll have a lot to bitch about. The effects were awesome, and Yorktown was jaw-dropping. Some of the plot was a bit of a stretch, but you're supposed to suspend your disbelief for a popcorn flick such as this. They offered a nice homage to Leonard Nimoy with this movie; Anton Yeltsen has a goodly amount of screen time as well and that made it especially bittersweet.

Ghostbusters: Far, far better than I had hoped. All the crap on the 'net about "an all-female Ghostbuster movie, blah blah blah" ....just forget the politics and see the show. There are lots of great tips of the hat to the original, without any overt "this is a remake" vibes. Neither myself or the spouse are really up to date with comedies and comedians, but the actresses were all funny in their own right, the script was tight, and it did a body good to see Chris Hemsworth embrace the eye-candy-and-little-substance role with such panache. There were laugh-out-loud moments, and the audience actually clapped after the movie was done. Stay to the end of the credits because there's a bit more.

10 Cloverfield Lane: It's an understated thriller with a slow build and a surprise twist. John Goodman is great in his role; he can switch from earnest to menacing in a blink of an eye and you're kind of left guessing as to whether he's a good guy or a bad guy. The female protagonist was pretty good at emoting without saying much. There were points in the movie that left you liking everyone and other points where you disliked everyone. The twist at the final 1/3 was a surprise (and I usually figure these things out well beforehand). We purchased this, but I'll throw it on for background noise. Renting it would be a good move.

Hardcore Henry: Thank God we bought this. I can't fathom how anyone could watch this in a theater, but then again, I find massive amounts of action/motion in scenes such as Transformers to be a bit bewildering on a gigantic screen. I was exhausted by the end of this show. It's incredibly violent, Parkour-packed, has a high-velocity soundtrack, and you must pay attention or you'll be lost. As in, don't look away from the screen, and don't watch it with one of those people that likes to start conversations in the middle of a scene. The plot was essentially a straightforward first-person-shooter type of "here is your task, go do it," but with a twist. I've never played a first-person shooter game, so this was a new one on me. The number and types of guns used in this show were astonishing. Both the spouse and I enjoyed this show, but we had to pause it a couple of times and wind it back for a few scenes, because there was so much going on that we wanted to make sure we weren't missing anything. It's an adrenaline rush- it makes Crank look slow by comparison. We'll watch it again, because we both missed things.

St. Vincent with Bill Murray & Naomi Watts. Slow start but plays (IMO) very well. Even better (for us) was looking at parts of the old neighborhood.

We just watched Big Eyes and there was a trailer for St. Vincent. We put it on hold and will watch it this week. I just feel better and lighter after a good BM movie.

Anyone watching Stranger Things on Netflix? I'm surprised it hasn't been discussed in here yet. The best way to describe it would be is that they basically made a 1980's thriller today, and in my opinion, they knocked it out of the park. The music really stands out for me, but everything else is 80's without the cheese. You'll know whether you'll like it by the first episode. Check it out.
