I kept expecting something to jump out the whole time. Did you notice the toad swimming around in that hole?
My guess was oil or something, but that was weird and reminds me of that organism that reacts to light they found in a North Carolina sewer a few years ago.

Clearly a warm area that caused the ice over it to melt out. Mr. Frog was enjoying the extra heat.
Some kind of thick, viscous mud... or clay/oil mix of some kind. Get some decay heat from below bubbling up like a lava lamp, and as the warm goo rises, and hits the colder water over it, it subsides again until another chunk from underneath bubbles up over or through it.
