Germany used essentially exactly the same gun with some slight updates as the MG3, so it could be one of those, instead. Although, Syria did have a crapload of StG44s, so maybe there were MG42s stashed there, too.

There's a weird aspect to the way primitive cultures approach combat. Its more about posturing and at most "counting coup" than it is about actually killing the enemy, taking ground and achieving objectives. I guess it explains how a bunch of pasty white Europeans could conquer the entire continent in short order.
