Default Sun Dec 19 Exploring near Lake George / Tarryall

    Sunday, December 19 2010

I'm taking the dog and the truck into the forest this weekend to look for a place to shoot out to 1000 meters.

So far I have 23 sites that I want to explore, hoping that one or two might not be fenced off - Google satellite does not show the fencing of leased/private lands.

Starting the day in Lake George, I think 9 AM at Starkeys General Store 38316 US Highway 24 (closed on Sundays during the winter). White/Silver F250 CrewCab Shortbed 4x4. Would be a really good idea if I could find another truck to tag along incase we encounter weather and snow.

Area is a triangle, Lake George Hwy 24 West to County Road 31 North up to Tarryall Ranch, South on 77 to Lake George. I'll collect GPS coordinates and pics. Checking with rangers later this week.

UPDATE: Corrected day of week to Sunday.

Did you end up going out on the 19th? I've held 4 group shoots out south of Tarryall off of Turner Gulch Road (CR23) this summer with ARFCOM and Snipershide members. You can shoot out to 1k there and there is already a fire ring set up. It's right off the road but difficult to see from the road, making it relatively isolated and not heavily used even in the peak of camping during the summer.

I found the fire ring on a different trip - I'll get out there with your next gathering. My only concern was that spot seems to be boxed in by roads with little or no back stop for longer range shooting. Obviously I need to spend more time out there.
