First attempt was 85yds, second was 120yrds. Both jumped a flapped wings, but not hurt at all. Oh, well. The 12g worked just fine! I guess it was just shot placement. I was attempting an upper body shot in the vitals and away from the breast, but I'm not sure where they actually got hit. Maybe try the FMJ's next time.

the .17HMRs really lack penetration power... the FMJs are better, but the bullets are so light, they just slow too quickly..

I did get a pass-through on a P-dawg using fmj... was my first shot with .17HMR at a live target, he just tipped over and landed on the ground.

inspected the target, and it went right through his neck- not much tissue there, tho... I think to take out a turkey, you'd have to get a head shot.

Yes, on rimfirecentral.com Ive read of people taking coyotes with 17hmr but I think with 17hmr its all about shot placement. With 17grn there is not much room for error.

So you shot a turkey with a rifle and it didn't get hurt? That is crazy.

for what it's worth, I've seen the hollow point .17HMR rounds fragment on a leaf... doesn't take much for them to come apart- so if they hit a feather, then it would be tiny fragments that would enter the turkey...

I doubt they would penetrate much through the feathers. 20gr hollow points might work better.

Before you think about taking a Colorado Turkey, I think you should check the regs on method of take. It has to be a certain caliber and I don't leagaly you can use a rifle??
