Years ago I bought a pistol from Long`s Drugs and he said my permit was all he needed, but that didn`t last long.

don't forget to add roman gnome to your liar list as he must have imagined it too...............
and no you cannot bypass a b/g check in co today unless you are buying a service/duty firearm with letter head. even being on the job if it's a personal buy a b/g check is required

    To clarify.

Long's Drug did do a background check. They just didn't charge you for it if you had a CCW. They had to do one and could not waive it. But they did charge a fee if you didn't have one. The fee was non-refundable if you were denied. The way they informed you of it, made it sound as if you didn't need a background check, when in fact they were only waiving the fee.

They stopped selling handungs after Columbine.

Per my post on Glock Talk (Lancelot) this no background check thing for permit holders is completly unfounded.

correct now it is not going on. it did happen if for a very short time. i called 2 stores in no co. garretsons and jensens. both of them remember the time a ccw was required to bypass getting a bg check.. even they agreed it didn't stay in effect for very long.
nowadays with litagation and lawsuits for hot coffee the state has passed the burden to the feds, and washed their hands.
my CCW was just renewed, prior to going statewide i went in when ed jordan retired to get a new CCW with new fingerprints and photo. took maybe 1/2 hr. my new CCW took 6 weeks. the reason being the sheriff was waiting on approval from the feds before re-isuing my ccw. how times have changed.

I will be the first to say that I`m not an expert at firearms or firearm laws, guns are just a passion of mine since I was a kid.

So I can only speak for myself on this,

    To clarify.

Long's Drug did do a background check.
If that happened then he did the paperwork himself, he gave me the little blue form w/serial and model # and cash register rec. and I left.

i remember it because I thought it was great 8) it was the only time it happened for me, but it did that time.

    Guys:
This is really to good. We're in 'dick measuring contest' over background checks? Please....

I checked my records and if they are correct (the Fed's signed off on them), background checks didn't start until mid 1995 (maybe August).

As for CCW permits, technically they are State permits, issued by local law enforcement...Title 29, Article 11.7, Section 29-11.7-101 thru 29-11.7-104. They are honored by other states as being a state permit (reciprocity).

    Hope this helps...

Until permanent brady went into effect in December, 1998, no background check was required for a valid CCW holder in CO.

After permanent brady went into effect, CO's county/city-issued permits were no longer valid as an alternative to the background check.

    Circuits:
I'm looking at Article's 24- 29 from 1997, where is the paragraph that allowed CCW's a pass on Fed 4473's.

    Thanx,

    guys.
why is it a few members have a hard time believing that you could (for a very short time) buy a firearm w/out them doing a bg check??
yes we had to fill out the 4473 but no they did not call it in.
one thing that was happening during this time was the # of ffl's that were not aware of this. some did and still wanted to sell only if they called it in. those locally i did not buy from.

    Thanx, Jim...

Your correct, from '68 to '95 there where no background checks only yellow forms (4473's).
