Default Keep the bolt face clean

Shooting the 15-22 today, and had a round fire out of battery. Blew the extractor out.

Had about 2k rounds without cleaning, the bolt face and end of the barrel have a lot of build up on them. I am sure that it had something to do with it. So if you haven't had this happen to you yet, make sure you keep it clean.

Now I get to call Smith tomorrow and see about getting a few extractors sent my way.

edited to add: Thats another reason to always wear safety glasses too.

Had a similar thing happen with my Marlin 60 - no extractor damage, though.

A dental pick takes care of the buildup very very quickly.
    9mm - because they don't make a 9.1mm

I don't think there is any damage to the extractor on this one either. Because of the design the extractor went flying, no where to be seen.

My 10/22 did this same thing to me years ago, no damage to it either.

Tried to call smith this morning. Just my luck closed until the 3rd.

WOW You got 2k through it without cleaning it ? I have the same rifle but due to .22's being dirty I clean after every firing time. YMMV

Yeah it had about 2k through it with out cleaning. This gun is one of the real early ones. It has ran like a champ since on I got it. It will eat anything I have tried to feed it. So I figured I would go and see how long till it started jamming. I had a DPMS 22 upper and it only took about 200 rounds before it started jamming. But this thing went ~2k and still wasnt jamming. But it did finally fail.

Finally got a hold of Smith yesterday. They are making me send the whole rifle back. They are sending a prepaid postage label, so we will see.

I have one of the early ones also-been keeping my fingers crossed since those are the ones S&W had problems with. Problem is I don't get out shooting much anymore so it's not being used much. Glad S&W is taking care of it though

I asked them just to send me the part since it is such a simple fix. The guy told me they are not doing that with those rifles yet and wanted me to ship it in to make sure everything else is ok. I think its a liability thing, but if they want to spend $50 to ship it back and forth more power to them. I have a spare one in the safe anyways so its not like I am out a rifle.

There was an article I read about the spring being changed to a blue spring but they also want to check out other things too. It's probably a liability thing like you said. There's a dedicated forum here :
