If You been thnking of an M44

I currently know zero about C&R stuff.

I've avoided them. I guess afraid I'd pay too much. I end up buying new stuff instead...

So am I hearing I "can't go wrong" with any $75 M44 or $120 No4Mk1?

Or is there something in particular I should look for?

look for abnormal wear & tear.

they are old ( > 50 years) so don't be expecting NIB.

make sure they function well (bolt action, safety, etc..)

take the bolt out and examine the wear surfaces and inspect the bbl.


I would obviously not select any thing with rust or w/o any finish on the metal (there will be some loss, but I wouldnt' get anything with more than 25% wear)

Kind of the same stuff You'd look for in a new/used rifle.
Check the bore, if it is way to dark, shy away from it.
Check the funtion.

Any reason to pick the No4Mk1 over the M44?

Or vice-versa?

you can find 'clean' ammo for the M44 easier than the .303 for the No4.

both are great rifles. the M44 usually run cheaper to aquire and shoot.

I ordered 880rds for a friends M44. $87/delivered.

Definitely got me thinking. Cost less than 200rds of hand-loaded 260 Remington, and a heck of a lot less hassle.

Anybody seen them on sale recently?

Check Big 5, if it's not on sale, You might be able to talk them into it.
