This might be my favorite shop, they have a large inventory, and I think the best staff in the Denver area. If you are a woman or have a girlfriend that shoots, Gina is the best. This is probably the friendliest shop for women, and my girlfriend and I always agree to drop in.

Angry Little Problem with 5280's Credit Card Policy...

FYI: 5280 Up-Charges 3% for using a credit card. Only one little problem with that... It is against the rules!!

Here is the skinny Direct From VISA along with a Phone Number to call and file a complaint against 5280's practices. When calling the number, press 1 for English and then Press NOTHING until a Human comes on. They will want your VISA Number for processing the complaint as they only take complaints from actual, verified VISA Cardholders.

    "Thank you for contacting Visa.

Surcharges are percentage-based additional charges on a transaction. For example, the charge is $100.00 and the merchant applies a surcharge of 2.5%, which equates to $2.50. This is typically submitted as a separate charge (transaction #1 $100.00; transaction#2 $2.50), but some merchants submit as a single charge ($102.50).

Visa does not allow surcharging except in instances of tax payments as provided by registration (official payments program).
A discount for cash is different from a surcharge. The rule states the posted price must be for cards, however, merchants can provide a lower price for cash acceptance. Discounts for cash are allowed by Visa. However, merchants are not permitted to post a price for cash, and then charge a higher price for cards.

Additionally¸ Convenience Fees can be applied in non face-to-face environments where the non face-to-face channel is not the standard channel of business. For instance, if the business is primarily face-to-face and they decide to put in a web access or phone access, then the merchant may charge for the convenience of this channel. If the merchant is primarily a web or phone type merchant, then they cannot charge a convenience fee because they are not providing an additional convenience to the customer. In addition, fees cannot be charged on recurring payments, where the customer is having their card automatically charged month after month.

With regard to the fee, the fee must be flat and reasonable. You cannot charge a percentage for the fee. That would be considered surcharging. For instance, assume the convenience fee for a merchant’s voice response unit is $2.50, regardless if the transaction is $100 or $500; the fee must remain flat at $2.50. In a surcharge environment, which is against Visa rules, merchants charge a percentage rate. If we use 2.50%, then the surcharge amount would be as follows ($100 = $2.50; $500 = $12.50).

Again, the surcharge example above is just for illustration. Applying a surcharge is a violation of Visa rules.

To report any merchant practices that you feel are inappropriate, please call Global Customer Care Services at 1-800-VISA-911 (1-800-847-2911). Please advise them that you were referred to file a complaint. The staff will be able to initiate a complaint form over the phone.

We hope this information proves helpful and thank you for writing.
    Visa Webmaster"

So... The 3% Uplift on Posted Prices for Credit Cards Signage in their Store VIOLATES THEIR MERCHANT AGREEMENT WITH VISA.

So... Charging a Percentage Instead of a Flat Fee VIOLATES THEIR MERCHANT AGREEMENT WITH VISA.

So... Charging ANYTHING more than the Posted Price (with the exception of Sales Taxes) VIOLATES THEIR MERCHANT AGREEMENT WITH VISA.

That's Three Strikes, folks! If you feel that this situation should/must be corrected, Take 10 minutes, Pick up the Phone and Give VISA a Call. File That Complaint.

I have nothing personally against 5280 armory. With that said... Wrong is just plain WRONG! They need to fix this situation Right Freakin' NOW. Or VISA will "fix" them. How? VISA can cancell their Merchant Agreement and prevent Credit Card processing in All business Functions... At the Store... At Gunshows... and On the Internet. In this, VISA, MasterCard, Discover and AMEX are in Lock-Step. Just imagine trying to run that biz WITHOUT Credit Card Capability... can you say, "Dead in the water?" I knew you could!

I sure hope that 5280 fixes this. I know that I won't be back to do any business with them until they do.

I finally had a chance to visit 5280 on two separate occasions. I have to say both visits were very pleasant experiences. Both times the staff were very friendly and very helpful. One of my co-workers was with me and wanted to handle a wide variety of ARs and optics. The guy behind the counter was happy to oblige and brought out a steady stream of items for him to handle and answered all questions in a friendly manner. The only rule was only one item out at a time. A rule I can totally understand.

As for the CC upcharge, meh. While I do find it a bit odd, I have the choice of paying it or not. And it's not like it's a surprise. The policy is posted in the store. Whether or not it violates some CC company policy, that's between 5280 and the CC companies. I could care less. It's not like they're tacking on 3% without telling you.

The one big problem I find with the store is that it is understaffed and the workers behind the counters are forced to help too many customers at once. But I am sure it is hard to find an employee who knows enough about guns to work there. I have been in about 5 times in 1 month for odds and ends for my 1st build. I have to say that I have only run into one doofus who works there. He was pretty much worthless as far as info. But everyone else was great. The ladies who work there remembered me and what I had purchased 3 weeks prior and we had a great conversation after my transaction. Oh, and they just changed their hours and are open even less. Check the new hours before you go. As far as the CC goes.... you pay higher prices at other stores for CC usage even if you don't. At least they give you the option. Markups up to 4% store wide are common place to offset cc fees.

I bought a p228 CPO there and my mom got a nice airweight 22lr. Both of us had pleasant experiences. They do not charge a 3% up charge on credit cards, instead they say they give a 3% discount on cash or debit transactions. The same thing just worded differently. So the price you see on the gun is what you will pay unless you got cash then it is cheaper. Both times I was there I was treated well. The first time this one customer that must be a high roller was able to get in front of me and interrupt my sales person a number of times but he was a paying customer waiting on a background check, however, all his questions were small talk. The second time the sales person was glued to my mom and dad and answered their every question. Over all it is a pleasant place to shop even with their credit card policy and short hours.

    Really good people there...

My first time going there and I came out with a "Bill of Sale" for a AAC SDN-6 7.62 and flash hider
I've been to and spoke to several class 3/NFA item dealers and they (for some reason) give the impression that only a trust, or a special letter from your county sheriff, or some sorta membership card with a secret hand shake will get you to purchase an NFA item. These guys at 5280 were just... "Oh you want that? Let's get started with the order".. do you have an LLC or a trust? We can help you get started on that too! With that awesome attitude... I was sold!
Matt and Gina are cool... 5280 certainly earned my business...

    FYI.

I believe they will be closed for the whole month of July. They'll be on vacation...

Easily my favorite place to go for gun stuff, everyone behind the counter always seem to be a happy mood. Their prices are pretty fair compared to other gun stores in the Denver metro area.

    Default One happy customer

I was in Denver to celebrate my annirversary with my wife earlier this year and stopped by 5280. Matt & Gina are the BomB! Really great people and fantastic attitude. Oh, and they have have a few guns for sale too!

Matt and Gina's listed prices are cash prices. If you want to pay with a CC, the price goes up to cover their cost of your convienance. I'm ok with that, it cost alot of money to operate a business. I bought a Savage 111 .338 Lapua for less money ($200.00) with a CC than I would have paid at Sportsman's Warehouse, BPS, of any other big box store. FWIW, I prefer to buy guns at only private shops instead of the "warehouse, small business killers", be that 5280, Bear Arms, or Garretson's.

I just wanted to put in my two cents as 5280 has always been good to me whether it has been Matt, Gina or Ian. Sometimes they are a little busy but if you want a minute they will give you just as much time as the last guy and don't try to push you into something you don't want. Thanks for the Arsenal rifle, love it!
