Rocky Mountain 3 gun, 20 March 2011, Raton NM
OK, I went down to Raton to check out the 3 gun put on by Rocky Mountain 3 gun. THis was the season opener so everyone was excited to get the dust off their gear. Weather was great, mid 60's with the wind only noticable on the long range (15+ mph, 3/4 value). Here is a brief description of the stages (in order as I shot them):
Stage 1: Pistol & Shotgun
Horseshoe shaped, 20+ targets, mix of clays, steel plates, poppers, and IPSC cardboard. Shotgun was staged about 1/2 way down, shoot all targets as they appear in any order as long as you shoot no less than 10 with each weapon (IPSC was pistol only). Plannig you stage helped tremendously here.
Stage 2: Rifle, Shotgun, & Pistol
ALL weapons on table and unloaded, 1st load for each on table as well. Load each weapon and engage 3 targets designated each and place on safe back on table. Engage 3 targets with each again and place in buckets. Key here was knowing how to manipulate your weapon systems under the clock.
Stage 3: Pistol & Rifle
Start from sitting and engage 6 or so IPSC cardboard and 2 poppers with pistol. Move to rifle bucket and begin engaging 5 reduced IPSC cardboard (25-50 yds) with rifle, moving toward baricade. Engage 2 steel plates (70 & 90 yds) with 1 round over the barricade and 1 round each through the barricade. EFFICIENCY and a good zero was key here.
Stage 4: Rifle Only
From the barricades (Clint Smith/VTAC) engage 2 100yd steel with 1 round each from a diagnol slot and a horizontal slot, move to other barricade. Then engage steel plates (150, 200, 250, 300 yds) with 1 round each from kneeling and prone from behind barricade. Oh, winds were 15+ mph (3/4 value) Key here was to know you unorthodox shooting positions and hold offs for varoious wind values. I shot it with my 10" gun!
Stage 5: Shotgun Only
Engage 18 targets (clays, plates, poppers, and bird) as they appear, then 2 steel gongs with slugs, 1 each, from over and under the barricade. You had to keep your head up when loading and have a good set of sights (not a breaching shotgun) for slugs.
Good day, lots of fun.
