WTK: Wall or Canvas tents

Looking into getting a wall tent and wanted to get some feed back on things to look out for. Basically several of us would buy a good quality tent to use as a base camp for hunts.

We had been using a regular tent until a storm last year put it out of it's misery and put us in misery. One guy had enough and so this is the year for a nice spacious canvas tent.

-Usually 4-5 guys with cots
-Tent will be used/able to use in all seasons
-Ground/floor cover
-Not sure on the stove option at this point
-Weight doesn't matter much since this will be at the main camp so it will ride in a vehicle until we get to the set up site
-Right now I'd say price isn't too much of a problem. We want a good quality tent that will last for years and know that will cost up front but at the same time we aren't going for a tent when we could get an RV

They have been around a long time. Spend the money up front on windows and stove flue. You can actually extend the front of your
tent with a tarp



See the extention at the top? It started to rain and we put a tarp
over it made a nice place to keep dry.

We've used ours for about 17 years now, no problems except that the family group has gotten bigger so we are gonna have to get another one.

A Traditional Canvas Wall Tent Is ..well Pretty Smelly ...they Get Really Dirty...have All Kinds Of Quirks And Are Heavy As Hell...

There Are New Materials Out That Wall Tents Are Being Made From That Are 3 Times Lighter In Weight, Fireproof, More Water
Proof, Easily Repaired, And Cost The Same Or Less... Just An Fyi
In Case You Dont Have 6 Nuns And A Forklift To Hump That Sucker Around...

Thanks for the input henpecked, HBARleatherneck and Mtn.man. A couple of us will head over to the Davis store and check out their displays and all. We were thinking of Davis since they are local and would be easier dealing with any potential issues.

Thanks for the zipper story, would be a lot easier driving over to their store to get something like that fixed instead of trying to mail it.

We had planned on at least one window but now will check out all the other options. The other guys had already planned on the stove so we'll get the stove flue.

We won't have 6 nuns in the woods hunting with us, 3 for sure. There's sister Remington, sister Winchester and sister Ruger.
Weight isn't an issue. If we can't lift 80 pounds from the garage floor to the truck and again from the truck a dozen feet over to the campsite then we have no business what so ever hunting anything heavier than a prairie dog.

I don't rely much on "there's better stuff out there" remarks unless there's link to the web sites or additional data. Do you have any links, personal experience or any additional information on the other materials you mention? Thanks

Get a clean 55 gallon drum, Everything will fit inside of it.

Roy Davis's tents are really nice! He's a good guy too. I spent 3 seasons in mine last year and loved it. His stoves are great because they pack into themselves, I bought a diesel burner for mine after first season last year and really enjoyed that in the later seasons, much better than waking up all night to stoke the fire.

Davis Tent has treated us very well since 2003. If you goto the store he has 2nds for cheaper. You can check out the tents he got set up in the store. We use indoor /outdoor carpet for the floor. Davis tents has awesome stoves. I would go 12x14 or BIGGER.

I have a Davis tent 12x14, internal frame, stove jack, wood stove, water heater, Propane heater as backup, chimney, Tarp for cover and extension and indoor outdoor carpet for floor. Have slept 4 comfortably in here on cots, weather snow and rain without a drop coming in. I am looking at selling, would like to get around $1000.
