Default Good first gun to get my feet wet with?

I'm looking for an entry level AR kit. I don't have anyone with one to toy around with, so I figure I will have to learn through the school of hard knocks.... I have a hard time being at the right place and time at the clubs I'm in. I do a lot of shooting on my own in Kansas (I have access to LEO range).

What kits would you reccomend. I have to keep it reasonable, I'm heading for AK in 3 months for a 2 week float trip (cash it tight).....

    OR,
should I try to find a used one?????

JT is the one I was looking at first and the most......
It's odd, but anyone that has pics of his kids on a web page that sell ARs gets my vote.

If I want to target shoot, try 3-gun and shoot varmints.
is a 16" 1x9 twist bbl, flat top upper ok? Or longer?
what else would I want to look for?
If I get one of his kits, where do you reccomend the lower come from? It looks like he only sells complete rifles or just uppers in the kits.

I kind of like the DSC Star 15......
    thanks

the 16" is a good all round length. 20" would be better for targets and varmint IMHO.

pretty much any of the main line lowers will work (RRA, Bushmaster, Armalite, Colt...etc)

I decided to go with a DPMS lower w/ ACE - ARFX stock from Alan. He is givng me a pretty good deal. I will probably buy a J&T upper or one from Alan. It depends on what Alan has and for what prices.

    Thanks for your time.....

    I'd get a used one
or get a new lower and a used upper
I put together a working AR (CavARms lower, Colt upper) for under $500
    works fine.

    check the EE on ar15.com
plenty of stuff and shipping on an upper is cheap because ti's just machine parts
